Annika's reading

Krista and I could not be prouder of Annika's advanced reading progress. When she was tested at Isely she "frustrated out" at 5th grade level, and is reading proficiently at 3rd grade level now. She is barreling through chapter books and getting better at her spelling...last week she announced to us that she was going to make the Accelerated Reading billboard in the school, where they have about 30 or 40 kids' pics posted in rank for how many points they've accrued. While she's at the bottom in points, the principal rather excitedly told Krista that Annika was the first kindergartener to make the board at all.

She's our little star!

Roo and Jasper get some face time here. They are always so much fun and have so much personality. Annika's friends are terrific kids--Krista and I always enjoy having them around. The intensity at the skee-ball tables was impressive...

Celebrated at Chuckie Cheese on November 21--Mommy was going to be away on the actual day--with our friends Bob and Naomi and their kids Roo and Jasper, plus Emily and Nami Foster. Annika wasn't too sure about the big hug-giving mouse, but she had a blast for the rest of it. That's good; Chuckie Cheese is done. Hopefully we will never go there on a weekend day again, ever.

Annika's teachers... Mrs. Holcombe, Mrs. Puckett, Mrs. Miller, Mr. Simpkins. She really seems to enjoy Mr. Simpkins' class.

December 4, 2009: Annika turns six.

My cousin Amy has inspired me to start making a blog as a location for videos and anecdotes and pictures about Annika and our lives away from family way out in ICT KS. I will post videos here tomorrow, I hope, of things shot this week. I hope to leave them completely unedited in order to get them up frequently. I have to do a better job of sharing and documenting our bean's childhood.

Anyway, I stayed up late last night and made cupcakes from scratch to take to Annika's class at Isely today. They got to attend class in their pjs, which made them all tremendously excited (Annika said earlier this week that it would be the greatest day of her life, to have pjs day at school on her birthday).

Upon picking her up at the end of the day I asked her which restaurant she would like to eat at for her b-day; she chose Bartelli's and ordered a cheese pizza. We got garlic rolls too. When we got home we unwrapped presents. Well, actually, I confessed to her that I had not wrapped them while we were driving home and asked her if she wanted to wait til tomorrow or just have them unwrapped. Eventually I hit on the idea of her finding something to do while I went in a room in the house and wrapped them. She liked that best, so that's what we did! Then she eagerly tore into the presents. I was excited that she was quite taken with the ladybug umbrella I got her in Texas ("Daddy, I had been wanting a ladybug umbrella!" spoken with such enthusiasm that I almost believed that she had always wanted one, even though I was sure she had never seen one before in her life!). She was also pretty taken with a second Ivy and Bean book, a first Nancy Drew book she got from Grandpa, and a Nutcracker pop-up book from Aunt Wendy. She got phone calls from many in the family and seemed to have a nice night and a good day all around, even if Mommy had to be out of town.
